A year in the life of a Carpenter's log

• Feb - achievement: Framed the upper two floors of Riverside Commons residential, 8,400 sq ft, on schedule despite snow delays in January. Completed header work and rough openings for HVAC two weeks ahead of electrical rough-in.
• Feb - feedback: GC Tom Reeves told me on site: 'Your wall layouts are right the first time. Saves us rework every time.' Happened during the framing inspection walkthrough.
• Apr - task: Took over trim work on Lakeshore Plaza after original Carpenter left mid-job. Learning crown moulding sequencing on a 6,000 sq ft commercial space with tight corner angles and existing structural quirks.
• May - achievement: Finished all interior trim on Lakeshore Plaza: crown, baseboards, door frames, 47 interior doors hung and adjusted. Completed in five weeks despite discovering framing was 2 inches out of plumb on the south wall.
• May - task: Shim work on the south wall of Plaza meant rebuilding door frames from scratch on 12 openings. Tight tolerance work; took longer than the original schedule allowed but result meets spec.
• Jul - achievement: Built and installed custom stair assembly for Riverside Commons penthouse: 14 treads, walnut stringers, newel posts, and curved handrail. Delivered without callbacks or fit issues.
• Aug - feedback: Lakeshore Plaza project manager Karen Chen emailed the team: 'The trim finish on this space is better than the samples we approved. Detail work was excellent.' After final punch-list walkthrough.
• Sep - task: Started on the Morrison family renovation: 1,200 sq ft residential remodel in a 1987 colonial with hidden structural issues. Finding rotted rim board under kitchen during demolition; scope expanding but communicating early with homeowner.
• Oct - achievement: Completed Morrison kitchen and bathroom: custom cabinet refacing, new layout with island, new hardwood floor installation and finishing. On budget despite the rim board repair; owners very satisfied.
• Nov - task: Picked up rough framing for the Westfield commercial build when the crew was short-staffed. 3,500 sq ft metal stud framing; not my usual work but kept the schedule moving.
• Dec - feedback: Site supervisor Derek Walsh said in the yard: 'You're one of the few people who actually checks your own work before I get there. Makes the whole day run smoother.' While reviewing the Westfield frame.
