A year in the life of a Teacher's log

• Sep - achievement: Year 9 GCSE mocks in English: 68% of my cohort achieved Grade 5 or above, up from 52% in the autumn diagnostic. Focussed on essay structure drills and timed writing practice.
• Oct - task: Took over Year 10 Triple Science from February after Ms. Patel's maternity leave began. Started with their genetics unit, inherited patchy notes from autumn term.
• Oct - feedback: Head of English told me after the mock results meeting: 'You've gotten this cohort to believe they can write. That's the hardest part.' Noted in her email on 14th March.
• Nov - task: Designed new KS3 poetry scheme for Years 7 and 8 using the exam board anthology. Built in close-read tasks tied to Paper 2 skills rather than general comprehension.
• Jan - achievement: Year 11 final English Lit exam results: 76% Grade 5 and above, 34% Grade 7 and above. Cohort entered at Grade 3 average on entry; five students exceeded their target grade.
• Jan - task: Ran two after-school revision clinics for Year 11 in the fortnight before exams. Attendance averaged 14 students per session; focused on Paper 1 unseen poetry strategies.
• Mar - feedback: Year 9 parent, Mr. Chen, emailed to say his son had gone from 'dreading English' to 'actually wanting to read books'. Mentioned it in his end-of-year feedback form on 28th June.
• Apr - achievement: Created and piloted new catch-up intervention for Year 10 Triple Science students who fell behind during summer. Eight students engaged; four moved from Grade 3 to Grade 4 by October assessment.
• May - task: Covered Year 8 Geography for a week while Mr. López attended a course. Taught climate zones to three classes using existing lesson plans but had to rework the final assessment.
• May - feedback: During October observations, our Deputy Head noted: 'Excellent use of turn-and-talk. Students are reasoning aloud, not just answering.' Written in the feedback form, 12th October.
• Jun - achievement: Year 10 Triple Science mock results: mean grade moved from 4.2 in September to 5.1 in November. Attributed to practise papers and targeted feedback on exam technique introduced in October.
