Example Achievement Log for a Management Consultant
This is a year in the working life of a Management Consultant at a mid-market firm, juggling three client engagements, an internal initiative, and the usual office politics. The log captures real momentum: a struggling turnaround that started badly but recovered, a colleague who became an ally, and the hard work of selling follow-on scope.
A year in the life of a Management Consultant's log
- Jan - task: Onboarded to Meridian Foods engagement. Day 1: discovered the supply chain audit was three weeks off track due to missing warehouse data from their São Paulo facility. Spent first two weeks rebuilding the data feeds.
- Feb - achievement: Closed the Meridian supply chain audit with 47 process gaps identified. Client CFO made a point of thanking me in the kickoff for the São Paulo recovery. Report delivered 8 March, one week early.
- Feb - feedback: Partner James Chen said in the corridor: 'Your Meridian work got them to commission the full three-site redesign. That's six months of follow-on revenue.' Turns out my data rebuild convinced the CFO to expand scope.
- Apr - task: Moved to Harlow Packaging as senior analyst on their cost-to-serve study. Client team was fractious, each division claiming benchmarks didn't apply to them. Spent two weeks building credibility through detailed unit economics for each site.
- May - task: Harlow engagement took a hit when Finance Director pushed back on overhead allocation methodology. I was wrong about the labour split across distribution and returned with revised numbers. Client accepted the correction and we moved forward.
- May - achievement: Harlow cost-to-serve model complete. Identified £2.3m of annual run-rate savings across procurement, logistics, and fixed cost. Three of the four divisions had now bought in, signed off 14 July.
- Jul - achievement: Started internal project redesigning our staffing allocation system. Current model was a spreadsheet run by one person who held all the knowledge. Built a proper database and wrote the intake process documentation.
- Aug - feedback: Staffing system went live. Operations Manager told me: 'Three partners asked about it by day two. This saves us hours a week.' Rolled it out to all six offices by month end.
- Oct - task: Joined Glenrock Industries as engagement lead on a profit recovery programme. Their commercial team and operations team blamed each other for margin erosion. Built a contract-level analysis to show where the problem actually was.
- Nov - achievement: Glenrock analysis revealed 34 customers with negative or near-zero contribution margins. Worked with their sales director Sarah to develop exit and repricing strategy. Presented findings 8 November. Client asked to extend into implementation.
- Dec - task: December was proposal and planning for Glenrock Phase 2. Built out 16-week implementation roadmap, scope for the portfolio rationalization work, and staffing plan. Handed off the planning to the delivery team before Christmas.
What makes a strong entry
What most people write: Successfully delivered the supply chain audit on time.
What went in the log: Closed the Meridian supply chain audit with 47 process gaps identified. Client CFO made a point of thanking me in the kickoff for the São Paulo recovery. Report delivered 8 March, one week early.
Names the client, counts the gaps (concrete outcome), names the person who recognised it, specifies which element of the work mattered (the data rebuild), and adds the actual date and lead time, turning a generic 'on time' into proof that the early delivery was noticed.
What most people write: Worked on internal staffing system project.
What went in the log: Started internal project redesigning our staffing allocation system. Current model was a spreadsheet run by one person who held all the knowledge. Built a proper database and wrote the intake process documentation.
Explains the baseline problem (single-person bottleneck, spreadsheet), describes the concrete deliverables (database and documentation), and provides enough texture that six months later you can explain to your reviewer why this mattered operationally, not just as generic 'initiative'.
How this becomes your review in November
This year I moved from turnaround support to advisory leadership. The Meridian supply chain audit started with missing data and tight timelines, but rebuilding the São Paulo feeds early and delivering the report a week ahead earned us a six-month follow-on scope expansion worth significant revenue. At Harlow, I had to rebuild credibility with a sceptical client after initially misjudging the overhead allocation, and recovered by standing corrected and returning with revised numbers, all four divisions eventually signed the £2.3m savings model. Most recently at Glenrock, I led the discovery phase on a profit recovery programme, identifying 34 unprofitable customer relationships and presenting a repricing strategy that extended the engagement into implementation, showing I can move clients from problem diagnosis to action.
